Proud to be Northern

Poem of the North

I’m proud to be contributing to the Poem of the North, a growing online artwork commissioned to celebrate the Northern Poetry Library’s 50th anniversary.

The Poem of the North includes the work of fifty selected poets, each writing in a brand-new poetic form on the theme of ‘North’. Inspired by the number assigned to English poetry in libraries, the ‘821’ form is an 11-line, 3 stanza poem. It twists and turns at every verse — imagine a sonnet crossed with a haiku.

The Poem of the North is an exciting and imaginative project. Selected poems will be published over a period of six months in five cantos. You can watch the digital artwork grow as a new poem is released every three days. I have no idea when my poem Tyne Undertow will appear, which only adds to the thrill of taking part!

Visit Poem of the North to read the unfolding poem. You can also read Lisa Matthews’ blog piece on the selection process here.
